Ohio students must complete the state minimum 20 course units. The state minimum includes 4 English language arts, 4 mathematics, 3 science, 3 social studies, 1/2 health, 1/2 physical education, and 5 electives. Schools or districts may require more.
Students generally demonstrate competency through the required English language arts II and Algebra I/integrated math I end-of-course tests, or through an available alternative pathway after required remediation and retesting.
Students in the long-term requirements earn at least two diploma seals. At least one of the two must be state-defined.
Ohio has 12 diploma seals. Your school can help you choose seals that align with your interests and post-high-school plans.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Ohio's Adult Workforce Diploma Program is available to eligible Ohio residents age 18 or older who do not have a high school diploma or equivalency and are withdrawn from school. The state describes the program as no-cost to adults and directs learners to participating providers.
As of July 1, 2026, Ohio's older Adult Diploma Program and 22+ Adult High School Diploma Program are not available to new students. Learners should review the current Adult Workforce Diploma Program and HSE options instead.
Ohio High School Equivalence is generally available to learners age 18 and older. Test takers age 16 or 17 may also apply with approved documentation.
